I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole

2013, dir. Jim Tushinski

Respected Broadway dancer and choreographer Wakefield Poole created a worldwide sensation when he released his first gay erotic feature film Boys in the Sand under his real name in late 1971, kickstarting the era known as “porno chic.” In a time when anyone making, promoting, or appearing in what the US government considered "pornography" could be liable for prosecution and jail time, Poole was remarkably open and public about both his work and his artistic ambitions. But he was also much more than just a filmmaker. Jim Tushinski’s I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole explores the many different eras of Poole’s life as a dancer, director, chreographer, filmmaker, art collector, gallery owner, pornographer, and chef, creating an evocative portrait of gay life in New York and San Francisco during the height of gay liberation in the process. Featuring excerpts from Poole’s lushly-photographed films and reflections from his contemporaries and colleagues, I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole is a touching story of artistic integrity and disappointment, self-destruction, reinvention, love, sex, fortitude, and a little musical comedy.
