Boys in the Sand

1971, dir. Wakefield Poole

“There are no more closets.” - Variety

Broadway dancer and choreographer Wakefield Poole kickstarted the porno chic era and made Fire Island an international gay tourist destination with this groundbreaking debut feature starring the legendary Casey Donovan (Score). In Bayside, a young man (Peter Fisk) takes in more than the view when a mystery Adonis (Donovan) emerges from the surf. Then, Poolside, Donovan orders a pill from the classifieds section of an issue of Gay that turns into an Italian stud (Danny DiCioccio) when tossed into his pool. Finally, Inside, Donovan has a fantasy (or is it?) encounter with the Ma Bell repairman (Tommy Moore) working outside his house one day. An early masterpiece of all-male erotica, Boys in the Sand is an enduring classic and one of the most important gay films ever made.
